Chapter 18: Patrick

After the movie and dinner and junk food, my family situation appeared to have gone back to normal. Everyone silently went back to their regular Saturday night solo routines. I felt I'd done my work as patriarch and could focus on my fractured relationship with Hannah. So I changed out of my shorts and into a nice pair of jeans. I texted her as I headed to the garage to get into my car.

This is your warning, I typed. Then I added a smiley face with its tongue out so she knew I wasn't really threatening her. I'm on my way over and I want to talk.

Of course, there was a good chance she wouldn't answer the door when I got there. She'd never texted me back. Maybe she wasn't even home. She could be out at the club again. But I tried anyway. I knocked and waited, trying to catch my breath from the flight of stairs to her door so as not to look like a decrepit old man. I knocked again and finally heard movement on the other side.

Hannah opened the door. Her baggy t-shirt and short shorts told me she had no plans to go anywhere. She'd wrestled her hair into a poofy ponytail on top of her head and didn't wear a stitch of makeup. She looked more beautiful than I'd ever seen her.

"I want to explain myself to you," I said as she stood in the doorway staring at me.

"Go ahead. Explain." Her arm rested on the door frame. Her face belied no emotion.

"Yes, I was on a date with Lorna. We'd made the date before..." My hands swirled around like they were trying to do the explaining for me. "Before us."

"And you couldn't break it?"

"No. That would be rude."

"I don't think it would have been rude. If I'd made a date I would have told the guy I'd met someone else."

"It's different for you. In my social circle..."

Her arms flew into the air. "Oh, your social circle. Your fancy-ass society bullshit. Because I'm beneath you, I guess. Down here in the dirt we peasants have a different way of doing things, Sir."

She started to close the door on me but I blocked it with my hand. She didn't fight, but leaned on the door frame again and folded her arms over her chest.

"That's not what I meant at all."

"Yes, it is. You meant that you're on a higher level than I am so you have to show a higher level of decorum." She exaggerated a genuflect and turned to walk back into the apartment, leaving the door wide open. I stepped inside and closed it behind me.

"I'm in my fifties, Hannah. Did you forget that? Dating doesn't work the way it works in your thirties."

She turned back around and glared at me. "How could I forget it? I have eyes, don't I?"

"Thanks a lot."

"You want to know what I think? I think you went out with her to keep your options open.
